Jason Edwards
Photo-Journalist

Jason Edwards began his career as a Wildlife and Natural History photographer during an eleven-year career working as a carnivore and primate husbandry specialist for the Zoological Board of Victoria. He has tertiary qualifications in the Animal Sciences and a Postgraduate Thesis in the Batchelor of Applied Science in Scientific Photography. In 1991 he established the Stock Agency Bio-Images in Melbourne as a platform to market and deliver his work to clients globally.
Jason has photographed in more than two-dozen countries. His work has appeared in National Geographic Magazine, Australian Geographic, BBC Wildlife Magazine, Aqua Geographia, and Nature Australia amongst others. He has authored and photographed two children’s books; African Safari, a journey through African ecosystems, and Desert Journal, an examination of adaptations to life in the world’s deserts.

Jason's reputation for self-reliance and his ability to adapt has seen him placed on assignment in some of the most remote areas. His love of the less developed regions of the planet adds to the feeling of exploration and discovery that clients view in his images. His ability to depict even well known subjects in a unique manner has separated his images from the mainstream.

Jason is highly regarded for his Wildlife and remote landscape photography and also for his images of indigenous peoples. His passion in this arena has had Jason documenting the lives of the men at the world's largest ship breaking yards Alang, in India. Over a period of two years he surreptitiously made his way into Alang, to document the men's lives. "I have attempted to show that there is not only hardship, sweat and death in the lives of these men, but family, friendship and interdependencies that transgress their environment and are strengthened by it." In 2003 National Geographic presented Jason's Alang material in Perpignan France at the prestigious Visa Pour L'Image photojournalism festival.
In 2004 Jason was awarded the inaugural 'Pursuit of Excellence' Award by the Australian Geographic Society "For his extreme efforts and absolute commitment to obtaining rare and amazing photographs." Jason Edwards is a photographer with the National Geographic Society and is represented by the National Geographic Image Collection.
